Why does my house get dusty when the furnace comes on in the fall?

By Wisconsin Air Duct CleaningUpdated
The short answer

After months off, the furnace pushes out dust that settled in the ducts, on the blower and on the filter over summer, and a closed-up house keeps it inside. Start the season with a fresh filter and clean register covers. If the dust keeps coming back, have the ducts and system looked at.

What happens at the first fall startup

Dust and lint that settled on the filter, the blower and inside the ducts get moved the moment air starts flowing. Dust resting on warm parts can also give off a brief burning smell. That is common at first and usually fades quickly. If the smell lingers or smells like gas, leave the house and call the gas utility. Furnace repair is for a licensed HVAC professional.

A fall startup checklist

  • Put in a new filter before the first cold nights.
  • Vacuum the register covers, and wipe the vents they sit on.
  • Keep registers clear of furniture, rugs and curtains so air can move.
  • Check the return grille and clear off any dust or pet hair.

When dust keeps coming back

A little extra dust in the first days of heating season is normal. If surfaces keep gathering dust week after week, if you see dust streaks around registers, or if a fresh filter clogs quickly, the ducts may be worth a look. Dusting, vacuuming and a fresh filter come first, and a duct inspection can tell you whether cleaning would help.

Common questions

Is a burning smell normal when the furnace first turns on?

A brief dusty, burning smell is common the first time the furnace runs after months off, because dust on warm parts burns off. It should fade within a short time. If it lingers, gets stronger or smells like gas, leave the house and call the gas utility.

How often should I change the filter in winter?

Follow the filter maker's guidance and your furnace maker's instructions, since the right interval depends on the filter type. Check it regularly during heating season, and replace it sooner if it looks gray and clogged.

Can dirty ducts cause dust on furniture?

They can contribute. Dust that settles inside ducts can be blown back into rooms when the system runs. Dust also comes from fabrics, pets, outdoor air and daily living, so ducts are only one possible source.

What if I smell gas?

Leave the home right away and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. Do not use switches, phones or anything that could spark while you are inside, and do not go back in until you are told it is safe.
